As winter settles in Ann Arbor, the University of Michigan’s athletic programs are giving Wolverines plenty to cheer about. With 10 teams ranked in the top 25 nationally—and five of them in the top 10—there’s no shortage of excitement for Michigan sports fans.
Here’s your Ann Arbor Hub winter update on all things Maize and Blue.
Basketball Buzz
Men’s Basketball (#21): In his first season, head coach Dusty May has the Wolverines firing on all cylinders. With a 6-1 record in Big Ten play, the team is second in the standings and has sold out its last four home games. Don’t miss the Pink Game against Oregon on February 5 at Crisler Center.
Women’s Basketball (#24): The Wolverines are back in the AP rankings after three straight wins, improving to 13-5 overall. This Saturday, they’ll take on Michigan State in the annual Crash Crisler game. It’s a Maize Out—be sure to show your colors!
Ice Hockey Heating Up
Ranked ninth nationally, Michigan’s ice hockey team is aiming for a third consecutive trip to the NCAA Frozen Four. They recently delivered an electrifying overtime win against top-ranked Michigan State. With just weeks left in the regular season, the Wolverines are looking to secure home ice for the playoffs. Ann Arbor Hub visited Yost Arena to see them face off against Penn on January 31st, unfortunately, our wolverines lost.

Spring Sports Sneak Peek
Baseball: The Wolverines head to Puerto Rico on February 14 to kick off their season. Three players—Mitch Voit, Dylan Vigue, and Grant Bradley—were named to the Perfect Game All-Conference Preseason Team. Mark your calendars for the home opener on March 11.
Softball: Senior Lauren Derkowski and junior Maddie Erickson are already earning preseason accolades, with Erickson named a Softball America Preseason All-American. This team is one to watch!
Lacrosse: Both the men’s and women’s lacrosse teams start their seasons in early February, with the men hosting Marquette on February 1 and the women traveling to Jacksonville on February 7.
Spotlight on Olympic Sports
Men’s Gymnastics (#2): With Olympic bronze medalists Paul Juda and Fred Richard leading the charge, Michigan is eyeing its seventh NCAA title. Crisler Center will host both the Big Ten and NCAA Championships this spring—don’t miss it!
Swimming & Diving: Michigan swept Ohio State in their latest meet, marking an impressive start to 2025. The team takes on Miami (Ohio) next on February 1 for Senior Day.
Field Hockey: Sophomore Abby Burnett recently won gold with Team USA at the Rohrmax Cup, a perfect lead-up to February’s Indoor Hockey World Cup.
Football Highlights
Michigan Football ended 2024 in style, beating Alabama in the ReliaQuest Bowl and finishing the season on a three-game win streak. Season ticket renewals for 2025 start January 31. Interested in joining the fun? New season ticket requests open in March.
