Supporting Local Gems: A Winter Stroll Through Nickels Arcade

Winter in Ann Arbor may slow things down, but the charm of Nickels Arcade remains timeless. This historic, glass-roofed corridor has been a staple of downtown since 1915, offering a uniquely Ann Arbor experience that blends history, character, and community. However, as temperatures drop, foot traffic dwindles, and the small businesses inside the arcade need our support more than ever.
I recently had the pleasure of chatting with Elmo Morales, owner of Elmo’s T-Shirts and a familiar face to many in Ann Arbor. A former Community High School gym teacher, Elmo has been running his beloved t-shirt shop since 1977. His store is more than just a place to grab a cool, custom design—it’s a local institution that represents Ann Arbor’s creative spirit. As he shared stories of the shop’s journey through different downtown locations over the years, it became clear that Elmo’s is the heartbeat of the arcade, and his passion for the community is truly inspiring.
But Elmo’s isn’t the only gem inside Nickels Arcade. Each business here tells a story, and supporting them means keeping a piece of Ann Arbor’s history alive.
Businesses That Make Nickels Arcade Special:
Comet Coffee – A Cozy Haven for Coffee Lovers
Step into Comet Coffee, and you’ll immediately feel at home. This tiny but mighty coffee shop is a favorite among locals and students alike, serving expertly brewed coffee with a focus on quality and precision. Whether you're grabbing a quick espresso or settling in with a book, Comet offers a warm escape from the cold.
University Flower Shop – Bringing a Pop of Color to Winter
Tucked inside the arcade is University Flower Shop, a family-owned florist that has been brightening Ann Arbor with gorgeous floral arrangements for decades. Their thoughtfully crafted bouquets make the perfect gift, but you don’t need an occasion to treat yourself to a little beauty. During winter, a fresh bouquet can be just the thing to lift your spirits.
Bon Bon Bon – Chocolate That’s Almost Too Pretty to Eat
If you have a sweet tooth, Bon Bon Bon is a must-visit. This artisanal chocolate shop creates handcrafted “bons” with creative flavors that change seasonally. Each tiny masterpiece is a work of art, made with care and a bit of whimsy—perfect for a winter indulgence or a thoughtful gift.
Arcade Barbers – A Haircut with History
One of the arcade’s oldest businesses, Arcade Barbers has been keeping Ann Arbor well-groomed since 1917. Walking in feels like stepping back in time, where the chairs and mirrors have seen generations of Wolverines. Whether you need a fresh cut or just want to experience a classic Ann Arbor tradition, this barbershop is the place to go.
The Caravan Shop – A Hidden Treasure Trove
The Caravan Shop has been in the arcade since 1927, and stepping inside feels like discovering a secret wonderland of unique gifts, trinkets, and keepsakes. Whether you’re hunting for the perfect greeting card or a one-of-a-kind Ann Arbor souvenir, this shop has something special waiting to be found.
Maison Edwards Tobacconist – A Timeless Classic
Since 1963, Maison Edwards has been Ann Arbor’s go-to spot for fine tobacco products. Even if cigars aren’t your thing, the shop itself is a piece of living history, with an old-world charm that’s worth experiencing.
How We Can Support These Local Businesses
Winter is the toughest season for these small businesses, and they rely on the community to keep their doors open. Here’s how we can show our support:
Shop Local – Instead of ordering online, take a stroll through Nickels Arcade and pick up gifts, coffee, or a fresh haircut.
Spread the Word – Share your favorite shops on social media, leave a positive review, and encourage friends to visit.
Be a Regular – Even small purchases make a big difference. A weekly coffee from Comet, a bouquet from University Flower Shop, or a fun tee from Elmo’s adds up!
Nickels Arcade isn’t just a shopping destination—it’s a piece of Ann Arbor’s heart. These businesses bring life, character, and history to downtown, and our support ensures they’ll continue to do so for years to come. So the next time you’re downtown, step inside, explore, and shop local. Nickels Arcade is more than just a landmark—it’s a community, and it’s ours to keep alive.
