Schools Are Closed! Top Sledding Spots in Ann Arbor to Enjoy a Snow Day



Snow day alert! With schools closed today due to the winter weather, it’s the perfect time to bundle up, grab your sled, and head to some of the best sledding spots Ann Arbor has to offer. Whether you’re looking for steep thrills or gentle hills for little ones, this guide has you covered.


Northwest Side (Water Hill)

Hunt Park: A favorite for Water Hill residents, Hunt Park has a nice sledding hill with plenty of space for fun. Feeling adventurous? If traffic is light, you might even race down Spring Street or Sunset Street for an added thrill.


North Side

Beckley Park: Located on Argo Drive, this park is a quiet, neighborhood sledding gem. It’s bounded by Pontiac Trail and Longshore Drive, making it easy to find.

Northside Elementary (Not Recommended): While this hill was a sledding hotspot decades ago, sledding here has been banned due to a history of injuries. The terrain remains dangerous, and sledding on this hill is prohibited.


West Side

Crest Avenue Park: This small, unmarked park is a popular spot among local kids and parents. It’s actually the far end of the Slauson Middle School athletic field, with a great hill for sledding.

Veterans Memorial Park: With its large hill and two sled runs, this park is perfect for families. It’s located at the intersection of Dexter Avenue, Maple Road, and Jackson Road, offering easy access and tons of space. One of Ann Arbor's most popular sledding spots it can get crowded early on a snow day

The Big Playground (Bach Elementary School): Hidden behind Bach Elementary, this sledding hill is a cherished spot for Old West Side residents.

Wurster Park: Known for its dedicated sledding crowd every winter, Wurster Park offers an impressive hill that’s a hit with locals.


East Side

Montibeller Park: Tucked behind Meijer on Ellsworth Road east of Carpenter Road, Montibeller Park is a fantastic sledding destination with plenty of room to play.

Buhr Park: This park features a long, mellow hill, making it ideal for younger children or those seeking a more relaxed sledding experience.

Mary Beth Doyle Park: This neighborhood park features a small but enjoyable sledding hill that’s great for families with younger children. Its central location makes it a convenient option for a quick snow day outing.


Other Must-Try Spots

Huron Hills Golf Course: The undisputed king of sledding hills in Ann Arbor, Huron Hills Golf Course off Huron Parkway south of Geddes offers multiple hills for every type of sledder. Pro tip: Head left from the crosswalk to find the big hill with a sand trap—perfect for catching air with a snow tube.

Burns Park: Home to “Magic Mountain,” a man-made sledding hill loved by kids and parents alike. From the top, you can even see Michigan Stadium!

Mushroom Park: Between Saxon Street and Waltham Street, just north of Scio Church Road, this park offers gentle hills that are perfect for younger sledders.

Crary Park: Located on Washtenaw at Cambridge, this park features a long, gentle sled run that’s great for beginners and families.
