Hockey at the University of Michigan is legendary. You can't talk about hockey in Ann Abor and not mention Gordon "Red" Berenson, a hockey icon whose career spans decades of excellence. From his NHL days to his transformative coaching at the University of Michigan, his contributions to the sport are unparalleled.

Playing Career

  • Stanley Cup Champion: Won with the Montreal Canadiens in 1965.

  • NHL Star: Played 17 seasons, famously scoring seven goals in a single game in 1968.

Coaching at Michigan

  • 33 Seasons as Head Coach: Turned Michigan into a collegiate hockey powerhouse.

The Wolverines boast one of the most successful programs in college hockey history, with nine national championships and dozens of NHL alumni. The team plays at Yost Ice Arena, a historic venue known for its electric atmosphere and passionate fans. Public Skating and Community Events

For those who want to hit the ice themselves, Ann Arbor offers excellent public skating facilities at Veterans Memorial Park and Buhr Park bundle up and enjoy the crisp air while gliding on the ice.

  • Veterans Memorial Park Ice Arena

  • Buhr Park Outdoor Ice Rink

2751 Packard Road, Ann Arbor, MI 48104​

One of the few outdoor rinks in the area, Buhr Park is a favorite for winter fun. Along with public skating, they host “Family Fun Skate Nights” throughout the season during general skate from 7-8:45 PM. Skate to themed music and feel free to dress up to each theme!

High School Hockey in Ann Arbor

Ann Arbor’s high school hockey scene is thriving, with local teams showcasing impressive talent and competitive play. The Ann Arbor Ice Cube: A Hub for Hockey

The Ann Arbor Ice Cube is a cornerstone of hockey in the city and the home ice for AA Huron, AA Pioneer, Eastern Michigan University and the Washtenaw Community College Women's Hockey teams. Known affectionately as “The Cube,” this multi-sheet facility is home to youth hockey programs, skating lessons, and adult leagues. It has been instrumental in introducing countless kids to the sport and fostering a love for hockey in the community.
