Exciting changes are underway at the Ann Arbor District Library! The Downtown Kids Area officially closed on Monday, January 6, for approximately 8 weeks as it undergoes a reorganization and update.

The goal of these upgrades is to create a more functional, engaging, and welcoming space for children and families. While the Kids Area is temporarily unavailable, the library is offering a temporary Kids Area to ensure young visitors can still enjoy library resources and activities during this transition.

What You Can Expect

The reorganization and updates promise to bring:

  • Improved space layout for better accessibility and navigation.

  • Exciting new features, including a brand-new magnetic wall play feature for kids of all ages.

  • A refreshed look with updated furniture and a reorganized collection.

Most notably, the Kids Area will transition to a category-based organization system that has been highly successful at other AADL branches, making it easier for families to find books they love.

Activities to Enjoy During the Closure

While the Downtown Kids Area is being updated, don’t miss out on these exciting programs:

  • Weekly Story-times: Join engaging storytime sessions for toddlers and preschoolers at other AADL locations.

  • Craft Kits: Pick up fun craft kits designed for kids at any AADL branch.

  • Special Events: Discover unique events and activities happening across AADL branches—perfect for families looking to stay connected and entertained during this transition.

A temporary Kids Area has also been set up in the Downtown Library lobby, offering toys, seating, and a small browsing collection of kids' books to ensure families have a space to play and explore during the coldest months of winter.

Additional Upgrades and Improvements

Beyond the Kids Area, patrons can look forward to:

  • Newly renovated bathrooms in the Downtown Kids department.

  • All-new energy-efficient LED lighting and new carpet throughout the second floor.

  • A fresh addition to the Downtown fish tank—stay tuned for the reveal!

These changes are part of a larger effort to enhance the library experience across all five AADL locations, including new furnishings, improved layouts, and updated amenities.

What’s Next?

The library team is working diligently to complete these updates and will share progress on the reopening timeline soon. For the latest news, visit the AADL Director’s Blog or follow AADL on social media.

We’re excited to see how these changes will enhance the experience for kids and families in the Ann Arbor community. Be sure to check out the temporary Kids Area in the meantime, and let us know in the comments what upgrades you’re most looking forward to!
