The pulse of Ann Arbor’s music scene has never been stronger, and Dre Dav’s latest album, Ziggys, is a testament to the city’s rich tapestry of artistry. A Reflection of the era of rap that has influenced so many of us, Ziggys takes listeners on a sonic ride through the millennial catalog of hip-hop hits, blending nostalgia with Dre Dav’s signature stoner sound. The album boasts impressive features from OT Genasis, Mozzy, Dro Hundred, and Mike C521, adding even more depth and versatility to the project.

Named after our local favorite live music venue, Ziggy’s, located in the heart of Downtown Ypsilanti, Michigan. Dre considers Ziggy’s his home stage, and they have hosted numerous events for Dre Dav’s Flight Team Entertainment, including their annual Super Fly Toy Drive during the holiday season.

Locally known as our favorite neighborhood stoner, Dre Dav has been a notable artist in the Ann Arbor hip-hop scene for years. Born in Highland Park, Michigan, and moving to Ann Arbor at the end of elementary school, he is a Townie at heart and always represents Ann Arbor. From festival stages like Cannabash to the Cannabis Cup here in Ann Arbor every Hash Bash weekend, Dre Dav continues to put the city on the map.

A Nostalgic Hip-Hop Journey

From the moment the album kicks off, Ziggys immerses listeners in an era-spanning celebration of hip-hop.

1. "D-R-E" – The opening track sets the tone with a beat that interpolates the classic Dr. Dre instrumental from his 1999 hit "Next Episode." Dre Dav effortlessly flows over the beat, paying homage to the West Coast legend while bringing his own Midwest swagger.

2. "Bust a Move" – Keeping the old-school vibe alive, Dre samples Young MC’s 1989 club hit of the same name. Filming the music video for this track during a performance at the Blind Pig makes it undeniably Ann Arbor, and that's exactly what we love about Dre Dav.

3. "I'll Be Good" – This track catapults us into the mid-'90s, with Dre offering his spin on "I'll Be Good" by René & Angela. The song also carries echoes of Foxy Brown’s 1996 classic "I'll Be" featuring Jay-Z, blending smooth R&B elements with Dre’s signature rap cadence.

4. "Gimme Dat" – Bringing us into the 2000s era, this track samples the song of the same name performed by Boosie Badazz featuring Webbie and Bun B. Dre Dav gives the track his signature stoner twist, making it a standout moment on the album.

5. "Bud Tender" – This track brings the R&B vibes with an interpolation of T-Pain’s hit single "Bartender." Dre flexes his storytelling skills, taking listeners on a trip with him to his favorite dispensary, capturing the essence of his cannabis connoisseur lifestyle.

Dre Dav’s Artistic Evolution

What makes Ziggys truly compelling is Dre Dav’s ability to modernize classic hip-hop sounds while keeping his storytelling sharp. The album feels like a guided tour through the golden eras of hip-hop, touching on influences from the late '80s to the early 2000s, all while maintaining Dre’s unique Ann Arbor cannoisseur perspective.

Why Ziggys Matters

More than just an album, Ziggys is a love letter to hip-hop’s evolution. Dre Dav masterfully weaves past and present, reminding listeners why certain beats, samples, and melodies stand the test of time. For Ann Arbor locals, it’s an added bonus that Dre continues to incorporate the city’s essence into his music, keeping its hip-hop heartbeat alive.
